  33. Christopher Wolf Says:

    CPL Owens -

Thank you for your sacrifice; I’m honored to know you’re going to be receiving this. Whether or not you know it, you’re an inspiration for us all, someone who chose to go the distance, come hell or high water, not because it was easy or because it would be “cool” but because you found yourself tasked with a responsibility and you moved forward like one should, faced it and accepted the consequences. This country would be such an amazingly better place than it already is if the majority of the citizens chose to follow your example of following through. You perfectly fit my personal favorite definition of the word Hero:

“A hero is one who does what needs to be done, when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences.”

Thank you so much, and please remember that we are all, regardless of situation, destined for greatness - we just need to make sure that we remain on the right path.

Thanks again, knowing that your example resonates in my heart.

    God bless you.

When I think of all the people who went to the inauguration to disrespect the President, and then see that photo of you, an individual who protected their right to do so, I see a man of great character. You chose to respect your Commander-in-Chief, and for that, many in this country respect you today.

They say the Marines instill great character in those who join. I know that it is those who join that possess great character.

    CPL Owens.

My friend called me two days ago to tell me that Michael Finke was killed in Iraq. He was a Marine on the helicopter that crashed with 30 other troops late Tues night. The picture of you saluting the president and your mother standing behind you crying sums up the whole experience of my friend (and mom). She is so proud of her son and believed in what he believed in. You know that belief. You and your mom can understand her pain, grief…, and pride.

This mom and I are in school together and we had to do a residency at Walter Reed Hospital. We spent a year flying from Cleveland to Walter Reed hospital in 2002. We saw many hurt men and women pick up the pieces one-step at a time. I will never forget the pain in their eyes and how many would go back that day if they could sneak out.

Your photo is a piece of this puzzle I will not forget. I will print it for my friend who is at her son’s funeral today. If you have the desire to respond with your thoughts, I would be honored. I have three kids and hope that they develop the passion, belief and commitment that you reflect so well. I will stand behind them as your mom stands behind you. God bless you and your mom.
    You are both true hero’s…

  48. Keith Says:

    Cpl Owens,

I just read the paratroopers blog that brought me to this link. I am writing you because I don’t think you should ever hear enough about your bravery and sacrifice. I am proud to say I am an American because of soldiers such a yourself.

As an American that has proudly watched for the past 3 years the performance of our Armed Forces in both Iraq and Afghanistan, I just want to say thank you. Thank you for voluntarily joining the Marines to defend this country and thank you for having being braver than I ever could have been in the face of danger.

In a society that puts celebrity on a pedestal, you are the true hero. Be strong and be proud and tell you fellow soldiers that their sacrifices are not in vain, and the American people are behind both you 100%. What you have accomplished is truly amazing and I thank you again from the bottom of my heart. May God bless you!
